Description
This is a fairly large piece I worked on for months. This is actually a first attempt at something this big and might I say, tedious? At least it was for me. It took several attempts at glazing to get the shadows correct. I tried to get a good composition with a nice balance of cool and warm colors for a contrast.
I am very thrilled to have had this piece accepted into the Alliance of Fine Art in Oakbrook, Illinois for their "Best of the Best" exhibit. This was judged among the top winners of each of thirteen art leagues from each of their "Best" pieces from the previous year.
I think it gave me confidence to attempt a much larger piece in the future.
Chrysanthemums, often called mums or chrysanths, are perennial flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae which are native to Asia and northeastern Europe. About 30 species have been described.
The genus once included more species, but was split several decades ago into several genera, putting the economically important florist's chrysanthemum in the genus Dendranthema. The naming of the genera has been contentious, but a ruling of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature in 1999 changed the defining species of the genus to Chrysanthemum indicum, restoring the florist's chrysanthemum to the genus Chrysanthemum.
The other species previously included in the narrow view of the genus Chrysanthemum are now transferred to the genus Glebionis. The other genera separate from Chrysanthemum include Argyranthemum, Leucanthemopsis, Leucanthemum, Rhodanthemum, and Tanacetum.
Chrysanthemum species are herbaceous perennial plants growing to 50150 cm tall, with deeply lobed leaves with large flower heads that are generally white, yellow or pink in the wild. They are the preferred diet of larvae of certain lepidopterans. (Wikipedia)

Phil, I don't mind telling you, it kicked my behind when I started this. The shadows for a transparent color like magenta frustrated me to no end. Now it's all I want to paint.

Wow, this painting is so realistic and beautiful. It is interesting in Chinese this mum is called "Crab Leg Mum". I guess using different imagination spider and crab legs can be related.
